Behavioural Advertising Methods

Behavioural Advertising analyses a user’s online search behaviour and internet browsing activity. It then uses data collected to display the most relevant advertising to that web users.  This is a form of Contextual Technology.

This form of  marketing may be based on relatively longer time of user actions than traditional Contextual Technology.

Advice: Consider user privacy carefully. Provide a simple opt-out opting. Some users may find it offensive for there actions to be used in any way, even if there privacy is protected.

State that you use such methods clearly.

Using this method should help deliver advertising that the user are most interested in at that time..

The action of delivering advertisements based on web users interests may restrict there possible introduction in to new products and services, these maybe outside there normal scope of searching. For example a user may search for Digital Cameras. Video Camcorders but the could also have an interest in car repair.

User may only be purchasing a product very rarely for example they may only purchase a suit every few years but they may purchase shoes for that item much more often.

A users interested at any particular time may change.

To enforce these Principles, the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) has developed a set of self-regulatory Good Practice Principles for online behavioural advertising. These Principles are based upon offering users notice about data collection and use, choice as to whether to participate and education about behavioural advertising and its benefits.

Some user could feed this type of contextual marketing is an invasion of their privacy. You should therefore provide a way of turning it off.
