As a general rule a website URL should try to be no more than 72 characters in length and Directories should be up to 3 Levels deep.

It is possible to use embedded programming code, (for example using PHP), into a standard HTML web page that will allow that page to be more dynamic and still be easier to find by search engines.

Google(TM) warns, "If you decide to use dynamic pages (i.e., the URL contains a "?" character), be aware that not every search engine spider crawls dynamic pages as well as static pages. It helps to keep the parameters short and the number of them few." Google goes on to tell us "Don't use "&id=" as a parameter in your URLs, as we don't include these pages in our index." Sub Directory and File Names
Advice: Spaces are not recommended within filename e.g. use : - "this_page.html" and not "this page.html" Some search engines, page ranking systems and site map generators find spaces problematic and may therefore not list such web pages.
There are ongoing arguments whether to use an underscore "_" or a hyphen "-" within a file name. Note that on some systems a hyphen "-" within a file name may be treat as a minus symbol, this may be more significant where SQL is uses as the back-end for that search engine.
