"Applied Semantics is a proven innovator in semantic text processing and online advertising," said Sergey Brin, Google's co-founder and president of Technology. "This acquisition will enable Google to create new technologies that make online advertising more useful to users, publishers, and advertisers alike." Semantic search uses the science of meaning in language—instead of just searching keywords, it checks the context of the words to return more relevant results. (Web 3.0)
LSI tries to associate certain terms with concepts when indexing web pages in a more intelligent and human required way. For example : Ford and Motors are associated with a the Ford automobile instead of a a river ford or the motor of another type, Bill and Gates are associated with 'Bill Gates' and not accounting bills or farm gates.
Semantics is more about understanding what words in web pages mean to humans (not computers). There for this method may involve some level of Artificial Intelligence

What is Web 3.0 and how will it impact PR? Matthew Gain
If like me you have heard the term Web 3.0 and the semantic web, but aren’t really sure what it means then watch the video I have embedded below. It is around 15 minutes, but is well worth the time investment. If you can’t spare the time I have attempted a summary below it. The mini doco is by Kate Ray, a NYU Psychology and Journalism major student. It is incredibly interesting and got me thinking about the impact of Web 3.0 on the PR industry. As I note below, the impact and potential of the semantic web is difficult for even the experts in the field to get their head around, so this post is a fairly large act of hubris by me, but hopefully it is a conversation starter. I would love to hear your thoughts as well, even if they are to tell me I don’t have a clue. Also see Web 3, Web 2 and Internet 2 (Much Faster) and Press Release, Article and Physical Publishing |

Many people have wondered where Wolfram Alpha fits in regards to the other search engines. As Berkowitz explains, people look at search engines to find information on the Web. He says Wolfram Alpha creates facts. The engine is already embracing social media with location and customization aspects. Over time, Berkowitz says the engine will include more social features that are relevant to user needs. Porter also points out that the engine wants users to be able to easily share Wolfram Alpha information with their friends. Wolfram Alpha has partnered with Bing and Berkowitz indicates that the engine would like to be integrated everywhere people go for information. He also believes that the factual information Wolfram Alpha provides is the next level of search. Also see Semantic Search. Latent Semantic Indexing. LSI and Search engines.
