Long Tail.
The Long Tail of search defines the less-competitive, usually a few word Keyword, Keyword Phrases that site visitors use to find web sites.
Generally, the Long Tail key phrases will be search on only a few times a month, but because of the sheer amount of such key phrases, sites with good content can get pretty decent traffic.
Could be classed as Niche web sites markets.
Long tail keywords involve searching for less common search phrases, (e.g. "yellow and green houses on the river"), that receive lower levels of traffic but have less competition for those keyword because they are less likely to be searched for. Although these long tail keywords may not generate a large amount of visitors to your site when bidding on hundreds or even thousands of these long-tail keywords your visitor numbers may increase.

Short tail Keywords are shorter phrases such as "Web 2" They are usually used for more general searching and research.

Advice: Usually Shorter Tail Keywords are used for a general search and general research, (the user may not be ready to buy at this stage). If they are using Longer Tail Keywords they are usually looking for that particular product or service and may therefore be in a buying frame of mind. This will require a relevant Landing Page. Long Tail Keywords may also include an location area e,g. "Computer case fans in Durham UK" Longer Tail Keywords may also cost less for Pay per click. Longer Tail Keywords may result in less Traffic/Visitors but can give a better Return on Investment because of a higher Conversion Rate.
Consider the Audience and demographics of any web site where you are thinking about advertising.
