Personalized Search is a search engines attempt to understand your searching methods and habits. They hope that by doing this they will be return more relevant when you search again in the future.
Search engines could, hopefully only if they have asked the users permission analyse other data such as bookmarks to try to increase more relevant results for you.
As well as personalized search using based on previous search queries they could also use predictive results as well. As an example; if the searcher has been recently searching the term ‘video recorders’ and submits a query for ‘media’ the search engine will believe they are searching for media for use with video recorders and try to return results of media for video recorders.
Advice: There could be privacy issues. Some search engines may request you to log in to the search engine to use this service. Returning items could limit new items outside your standard search methods being discovered and this could lessen your enjoyment when searching. Personalized Search could allow for this and make sure they return some new relevant results which may not have been found normally.
