Ping may have different meanings to different people. For example one meaning of ping is to send, (usually small prices of), data to a remote sever to time how long and if the same data, (if any), is returned. This is used as a test for speed and quality or returned data.
The term Ping when used with Advertising Methods it to send a RSS Feed or Blog Feed, (for example), to a web site or a number of web sites that accept ping feeds.
This is done when you update that RSS Feed. This can let subscribers or your RSS Feed and others know about the update quickly.
Advice: Recommended if not abused. This could help you inform sites and subscribers of updates to your RSS feed, Blogs updates, etc..
Don't over abuse even if updates are asked for by web sites accepting pings.
Pinging too many times especially without actually carrying outs an update to the information you are pinging about may be classed as Splog. Splogging spam.
