This is sometimes known as telemarketing a and may be split into two broad categories.
a) General Public.
Advice: Not Recommended. May be classed as illegal. Precipitants of telephone advertising may feel that they are being invaded by such calls and may become annoyed.
b) Businesses
Advice: May be worthwhile, (may be classed as illegal). If you have a particular special offer that is relevant to the business you are contacting. Can be very time consuming to find the relevant person to contact and persuade them about your offer.
WARNING There are laws restricting cold calling. From now on telephone salespeople must check that the businesses they are calling are not registered with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) before they make a call. Companies breaching these rules could face large fines.
National Do Not Call Registry. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) amended the Telemarketing Sales Rule, (TSR) to give consumers a choice about whether they want to receive most telemarketing calls. As of October 1, 2003, it is illegal for most telemarketers or sellers to call a number listed on the National Do Not Call Registry. Telemarketing. Starting January 1, 2005, telemarketers and sellers will be required to search the registry at least once every 31 days and drop from their call lists the phone numbers of consumers who have registered.
