A unique visit is counted when an actual person, (not a computer program), views a web page without pressing reload on their browser.
A Hit is not necessarily a unique visit. Technically, a hit occurs whenever a file is loaded, for example each image on your web page. If Hits are measured or quoted this figure may be very misleading. A site could increase the Hit measure simple by adding more images to a page.
Some Traffic measurement methods may state the number of Hits you may expect. Hits may mean the number of times the server accesses an each individual item on your page. Example, say a web site page has 10 separate graphics on it, each visitor to that page will account for at least 11 Hits, this is made up on 10 hits one for each graphic and 1 Hit for the actual web page it's self. So if you were you are lead to believe that you are getting 1,100 Hits per day this actually equates to just 100 visitors. You need to know the number of unique visitors and returning customers.
Each web site page the user visits could be counted separately so if a user visits 5 web pages and each of those pages has 10 separate graphics on it then the number of Hits would be 5,500, (5 pages * 1,100 Hits per page. So you can see how counting Hits can inflate the statistics.Traffic, Hits or even unique visits are not sales. Visitors may view wish your site, (a visit you may have to pay for), but may not make a purchase. They may wish to visit your site a number of times before buying. This is something you may need to consider before advertising.

Your Traffic and rankings should not be the major aim it your web site. Traffic does not put food on the table. Traffic may very well cost you more in bandwidth and other maintenance charges.
