Sun, 05 Jul 2009 17:35:02 +0000 - MacAlly has been producing the same IceKey keyboard since 2003, and while it’s a solid performer featuring comfortable low profile scissor keys and extra USB ports, it still ships with a maddeningly slow internal USB 1.1 hub. While this early USB specification is plenty fast for a keyboard alone, it throttles back speeds of all [...]

Junction (Free) Many web developers are familiar with symbolic links on Linux, Mac OS X, and similar operating systems. With a symbolic link, you can reference any file or directory by a different name and/or in a different directory. It turns out that NTFS supports a very similar feature called junctions, but you need an expensive set of tools from Microsoft or this convenient little command line programto use them. Windows 2000 and higher supports directory symbolic links, where a directory serves as a symbolic link to another directory on the computer. For example, if the directory D:\SYMLINK specified C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 as its target, then an application accessing D:\SYMLINK\DRIVERS would in reality be accessing C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS. Directory symbolic links are known as NTFS junctions in Windows. Unfortunately, Windows comes with no tools for creating junctions - you have to purchase the Win2K Resource Kit, which comes with the linkd program for creating junctions. I therefore decided to write my own junction-creating tool: Junction. Junction not only allows you to create NTFS junctions, it allows you to see if files or directories are actually reparse points. Reparse points are the mechanism on which NTFS junctions are based, and they are used by Windows'Remote Storage Service (RSS), as well as volume mount points.

I think a lot of people would agree with me when I say that, for some users, a tablet serves as a completely reasonable laptop alternative. But for others, even the best tablet still won’t do the job — they need a physical keyboard, louder speakers, and a display angle that doesn’t destroy their neck [...]
How you format a Mac hard drive is entirely dependent on what kind of drive you plan on formatting. For instance, is the hard drive internal or external? And if internal, has it been partitioned or are you looking to reformat the entire system to factory state? Whatever your formatting situation, this how-to guide will [...]
Most people, if not everyone, knew Steve Jobs as the charismatic face of Apple. The man had an “it” factor when presenting at those seasonal Apple keynotes, showing off the companyâs latest product releases. After his death, bold tales of his deeds in the planning room have been making their way on to the web [...]

There’s been plenty of Kickstarter projects in our browser tabs lately, but one of the more interesting is the Pebble E-Paper smartwatch. Its developers only needed $100K to bring the product to completion, instead they’re at over $6 million with 24 days remaining. If you haven’t read up on it yet, the Pebble is a [...]
Here’s some shocking information for you: nearly 20% of Macs have malware hiding out somewhere in the deep, dark recesses of their filesystems. The twist: it’s actually Windows malware. While that means it’s probably never going to do any harm to the Macs in question, it’s still pretty amazing to think that Sophos Labs found [...]
One of the nicest features about OS X is how simple the operating system makes it to take a screenshot. And not only is easy to take a screenshot, it’s easy to take the screenshot that you want. For example, using Windows, you have to jab the Print Screen button (if you can find it), [...]
At Apple, design is everything. Not only does the company want the best looking devices on the market, they also like to be ahead of competitors by having the thinnest gadgets, or by shipping displays with a resolution far above anything that has gone before. So, when there’s an opportunity to reduce the thickness of [...]
A few years back, Apple released an updated MacBook Pro with a more powerful graphics chip, the Nvidia 8600M GT. That proved to be a decision Cupertino would regret. The Nvidia GPU was defective, and as a result, the failure rate of the logic board in that generationâs MacBook was startlingly high. One Apple customer, who [...]
Apple is famously strict with the apps it approves for use on the iDevices, but it has just approved one uncharacteristically useful utility called Bluetooth OnOff. This app adds a simple Bluetooth toggle to the home screen of an iOS device, thus saving numerous taps to get at the settings. The app is launched like [...]

If you’ve been following the tech news over the past few days, you’ve probably seen a few mentions of the Flashback trojan. It’s been said that over 550,000 Macs have been infected, which is a staggering amount considering the relative safety (or at least the perceived safety) of OS X. The malicious software has been [...]
Everyone knows that Macs aren’t immune to malware infections at this point. Even with an operating system that’s as secure as OS X appears to be, the bad guys have gotten very good at social engineering in recent years. As long as they can trick users into clicking things they really shouldn’t click, there’s no [...]
