Portal ([Intel] Article)
Wed, 12 May 2010 16:30:00 PDT - It seems simple enough: open an entrance portal on one wall and an exit portal on another, and pass through to complete tasks. The tests become fiendishly difficult, however, when you must use the portals to redirect deadly energy pellets toward their targets, or jump through a portal far below, so your momentum flings you out an exit portal toward a seemingly inaccessible area. GLaDOS promises you cake when you’re done, but something doesn’t seem right. What fate does she really have in store for you?
The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition [(Intel) Article]
Mon, 03 May 2010 13:51:35 PDT - “Hi, I’m Guybrush Threepwood and I want to be a pirate.” Those words launched an iconic adventure game series, and now you can relive the first installment in The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition. Thrill to updated, hand-painted art, new dialogue recordings, and a remastered musical score. You can even flip back and forth between old and new gameplay whenever you want, in case you’re feeling nostalgic. A little grog should cure that, by the way.

MacAlly IceKey USB 2.0
Sun, 05 Jul 2009 17:35:02 +0000 - MacAlly has been producing the same IceKey keyboard since 2003, and while it’s a solid performer featuring laptop-style scissor keys and extra USB ports, it still ships with a terrifyingly slow internal USB 1.1 hub. While this early USB specification is plenty fast for a keyboard alone, it throttles back speeds of attached devices like [...]

Junction (Free) Many web developers are familiar with symbolic links on Linux, Mac OS X, and similar operating systems. With a symbolic link, you can reference any file or directory by a different name and/or in a different directory. It turns out that NTFS supports a very similar feature called junctions, but you need an expensive set of tools from Microsoft or this convenient little command line program to use them. Windows 2000 and higher supports directory symbolic links, where a directory serves as a symbolic link to another directory on the computer. For example, if the directory D:\SYMLINK specified C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 as its target, then an application accessing D:\SYMLINK\DRIVERS would in reality be accessing C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS. Directory symbolic links are known as NTFS junctions in Windows. Unfortunately, Windows comes with no tools for creating junctions - you have to purchase the Win2K Resource Kit, which comes with the linkd program for creating junctions. I therefore decided to write my own junction-creating tool: Junction. Junction not only allows you to create NTFS junctions, it allows you to see if files or directories are actually reparse points. Reparse points are the mechanism on which NTFS junctions are based, and they are used by Windows'Remote Storage Service (RSS), as well as volume mount points.

30 years of Apples in 2 minutes (Re: Makezine )

Gary Katz sent us this video that he did of his Apple Computer collection. One system morphs into another, starting with the Apple II. Not every system is here, but most of them are. Seeing the eMate (remember that?) reminded me I want to do a casemod of some modern hardware inside that case. The eMate was a flop, but the case was really cool (tres Batman).
