So how good is your Disaster Recovery Planning?

Here's a message I received about one system which even with RAID, (Redundant Array Independent Disk), systems and Back up methods failed:-

The server had a catastrophic RAID failure.

 The server, whose drive subsystem was a RAID 10 array - which provides the highest performance level of fault tolerance, encountered a highly unusual multi-drive failure.

4 of 5 drives on 2 parallel drive controllers failed simultaneously.

The likelihood of 4 drives failing simultaneously in this setup is similar to winning the Powerball lottery - several hundred million to one (actually closer to a billion to one).

In addition, because the actual RAID array failed, we lost our real-time backup of all changes that had been made during an upgrade.

This catastrophic "jackpot" created data loss - which in effect destroyed everything created in the past week.

(The server is automatically backed up twice a week to tape.)

The net effect of the timing of this outage means that any new items issued within the past 3 days have totally disappeared. Because the upgraded system was put in place during the window between backup tape runs, there is no way to recover what had been put into the new system. What timing.
