Mozilla wants its Firefox browser to drop support for Mac OS X 10.4--the operating system also known as Tiger that was released in 2005--but the plan is running into some resistance.
If support is indeed removed, then Firefox 3.6--the current version of the browser--would be the last one to support Mac OS X 10.4, although Mozilla would still issue updates for several months after the succeeding version of Firefox is released.
"We would like to take advantage of more modern technologies on Mac OS X, and 10.4 support has been a hindrance," Josh Aas, one of Mozilla's Mac experts, said in a mailing list post. "We are planning to make the decision to remove 10.4 support final and remove the code from the tree. If you have any strong objections please let us know now."
There are objections, of course.
"I still have two PowerPC machine that use OS X 10.4.11...As it stands now it impractical for me update either machine due to lack of funds...So if support for 4.11 is removed then that means I will have to go to something else such a iCab, Opera, or OmniWeb rather than Firefox and you don't need to lose users," Phillip Jones said in a response, suggesting a two-track approach. "You can create one with all the fancy new stuff. Then one for us poor people that [can't] drop ($3,000) at the drop of the hat and have to hang onto older equipment out of necessity."
But his objection and some from others have not moved Mozilla members to change course thus far.
"Does this suggestion come with a donation for doubling of full-time development resources, QA [quality assurance] and testing, build and release infrastructure, and user support for this second track that would cover a shrinking minority of Firefox on Mac users?" Mozilla's Asa Dotzler asked in a post. "There are currently approximately 1.5 million people using Firefox on 10.4 and we're fully aware of that...In one year, I expect 10.4 to account for less than 5 percent of Mac OS X users and at that point it will have less prominence than Windows 98."
Supporting Mac OS X 10.4 also comes with a penalty for those who are using 10.5 and 10.6, added Mozilla programmer Boris Zbarsky. "We can significantly improve the user experience on 10.5 and especially 10.6 if we drop support for 10.4 (we're talking something like 30 percent performance improvement on 10.6, for example if I recall the numbers correctly, between the newer compiler and doing 64-bit builds," he noted.
Mike Shaver, Mozilla's vice president of engineering, added that the decision wouldn't immediately cut off those with Tiger.
"10.4 users would still have a supported release until Firefox 3.6 was end-of-lifed, which I would expect to be at least 6 months after the trunk release of which Boris speaks," Shaver said. "They wouldn't be able to upgrade to the latest and greatest, but they would still get stability and security updates."
The latest version of TweetDeck is out, and although it's a minor update it also introduces some useful changes worth noting. Available for Windows, Mac, and Linux on Adobe AIR, the biggest change in TweetDeck 0.33 is an alteration to the program's guts that gives it more Twitter API breathing room.
TweetDeck now uses OAuth for calling Twitter's API. The API calls are how TweetDeck gets your tweet information from Twitter's servers, so this means that users can have TweetDeck update all their columns more regularly. In the previous version of TweetDeck, the API limit had been below 200 per hour. Now, it's shot up to 350 calls per hour.
There's also a new column navigator that lives at the bottom of the window. The navigator is made up of several bars, each one analogous to a column in your main window. Clicking a bar will jump you to the top of that particular column. For users with more columns than can fit onscreen, this should make jumping around much easier. Mouse over one of the columns and you'll see the column name, the service icon, the account attached if relevant, how long until the next update, and the current API usage. This can be good to know in case you're worried that one column is consuming too many calls.
TweetDeck 0.33 adds more media previews, including YouTube, Flickr, TwitGoo, MobyPicture, and Posterous, and also allows users to edit search columns without having to delete and then re-create them. Adobe Systems, evidently stung by recent criticisms of its widely used Flash Player browser plug-in, has promised better performance on Mac systems.
"Given identical hardware, Flash Player on Windows has historically been faster than the Mac, and it is for the most part the same code running in Flash for each operating system," said Adobe Chief Technology Officer Kevin Lynch in a follow-up comment to his own blog post. But Adobe and Apple have been cooperating to make things better, he said. "In Flash Player 10.1 we are moving to Core Animation, which will further reduce CPU usage and, we believe, will get us to the point where Mac will be faster than Windows for graphics rendering."
Things should get better with video, too, one of the primary reasons Flash has thrived on the Web. "Video rendering is an area we are focusing more attention on--for example, today a 480p video on a 1.8Ghz Mac Mini in Safari uses about 34 percent of CPU on Mac versus 16 percent on Windows (running in BootCamp on same hardware). With Flash Player 10.1, we are optimizing video rendering further on the Mac and expect to reduce CPU usage by half, bringing Mac and Windows closer to parity for video."
In particular, it's answering a security problem Matthew Dempsky reported in September 2008, shortly before Flash Player 10 was issued. Dempsky took Lynch to task for his statement in the comment that "we don't ship Flash with any known crash bugs, and if there was such a widespread problem historically Flash could not have achieved its wide use today."
"We picked up the bug as a crasher when it was filed on September 22, 2008, and were able to reproduce it. Remember that Flash Player 10 shipped in October 2008, so when this bug was reported we were pretty much locked and loaded for launch. The mistake we made was marking this bug for 'next' release, which is the soon to be released Flash Player 10.1, instead of marking it for the next Flash Player 10 security dot release. We should have kept in contact with the submitter and to let him know the progress, sorry we did not do that," Huang said. "It slipped through the cracks, and it is not something we take lightly."

Vitamin D, the start-up founded by three former Palm executives, said on Monday that it is ready with the final Version 1.0 of its software for Windows and Mac, which enables people to use a standard Webcam as a security system.
The company, which caught some interesting things on tape during beta testing, said that the single camera version of its software will continue to be free, as it was during beta testing. A version of Vitamin D Video that works with two cameras will cost $49, while a high-end edition that supports an unlimited number of cameras running off a single computer will cost $199.
The software works on both Macs and PCs and has as its biggest selling point the fact that it can pick out humans as opposed to just motion, allowing users to more easily pore over hours upon hours of surveillance footage.
The company uses artificial intelligence technology licensed from Numenta, a company started by Palm Pilot creator Jeff Hawkins.
"Vitamin D Video is an effective and inexpensive video monitoring tool that is easy to install and use. With this product available, there is no reason for any home, small business or school to be without video surveillance that really works," CEO Celeste Baranski said in a statement. "The enthusiastic response of our beta customers has already proven that Vitamin D Video works well in security applications, and is proving valuable for uses beyond traditional security."
The way people consume media has been constantly evolving, especially over the past five years. In 2005, it would be practically unthinkable for any consistent TV viewers to cancel their cable subscriptions and watch only online video. Now, many more people are depending on the Internet for their video content, made abundantly clear by the fact that advertising on sites like Hulu sometimes go for higher rates than that on network television.
In such an atmosphere, it's more important than ever for digital media players and converters to stay in front of the curve. More than two years ago, Real Networks took its media player, which was mostly popular as an embedded app for online audio and video playback, and added a one-step video-downloading feature. Today, the company is updating RealPlayer SP for Mac with the addition of a built-in video converter that also offers one-click transcoding for portable devices. The program lets Mac users download practically any unprotected streaming and then transfer it directly to an iPhone, iPod, BlackBerry, or other device. RealPlayer SP handles the transcoding in the background, which makes the front-end experience very simple.

Compared side by side with RealPlayer SP for Windows, I have to say that the Mac version isn't as seamless. In Windows, when you hover over a supported video, a download "button" pops up over the actual video. On the Mac, you actually have to start playback for the video and then a separate RealPlayer app will start up and present the various options. It may not be quite as quick, but the layout is still very straightforward so that even someone who is not at all savvy in the ways of digital video formatting will be able to use the tool.
Options after downloading
I did experience some technical difficulties while trying to transfer a video to my iPod Touch, but hopefully Real will work out the kinks during this beta release. In any case, I give the company credit for providing a free and easy program that addresses the overly convoluted area of video transcoding.

What's better than 27 apps for 99 cents? Why, 27 apps for zero cents, of course.
That's what you get from iCatchall, which, like last week's App Genie, delivers more than two dozen tools under one app roof. Normally it's 99 cents, but in conjunction with previously mentioned Free App a Day, iCatchall is free on Monday (and only this Monday).
As you might expect, there's a bit of overlap between these two kitchen-sink apps--but less than you might think. iCatchall is actually a mix of tools, games, and sound effects.
Instead of cramming everything onto a single screen like App Genie, iCatchall spreads its icons across four pages, which you swipe through just like the iPhone's own app pages. You can't reorganize the icons, but at least they're alphabetical.
The Fun and Games page contains mostly junk--unless you're into dealing cards (seriously, that's all you do), stacking poker chips, and watching two flaming balls of fire, well, flame. Only the two-player Texas Hold 'Em and Kitchen Sink resemble actual games, and they're both weak showings.
As for the sound effects, you get a rim-shot, a clapping studio audience, randomized samples of someone saying "huh?", and the inevitable flatulence.
Thankfully, some of iCatchall's apps have actual merit. ContactClone, for instance, lets you wirelessly share contacts with other iPod and iPhone users on the same Wi-Fi network. Very handy.
File Storage turns your device into a wireless flash drive. Just point your PC's Web browser to the IP address shown in the app, then choose files to upload. Again, very handy.
I also like the Reward For Return app, which generates a custom wallpaper with your contact information, so anyone who finds your iPhone or iPod can easily return it.
iCatchall's other tools include currency and unit converters, a tip calculator, a phases-of-the-moon viewer, a ruler, and a three-axis level. It's all good stuff.
And, hey, you can't argue with the price. iCatchall may be 50 percent junk, but it's also 50 percent useful--and 100 percent free if you grab it before midnight.
Security suite vendor McAfee debuts its 2010 product line today, introducing an overhauled interface and new features in a bid to remain competitive. The change to its interface is as dramatic a shift as the one that Avast introduced in its 2010 suites, although McAfee's look is drastically different from any major security program currently on the market. Most of the features in McAfee AntiVirus Plus, McAfee Internet Security, and McAfee Total Protection are not new, but the presentation is so radical that the improvements are likely to be glossed over. Users of older McAfee should note that VirusScan Plus has been renamed AntiVirus Plus.

The biggest feature update comes to McAfee's real-time defense engine called Artemis. These engines are now a commonplace feature in the better antivirus programs. First introduced in late 2008, Artemis is McAfee's blend of blacklists, whitelists, and cloud analysis. In the 2010 versions, Brian Trombley, McAfee's director of consumer product management, said, Artemis works in conjunction with McAfee SiteAdvisor to scan downloads as they occur. The scans include using real-time URL, IP address, and domain name data to evaluate downloads for threats before they land on your hard drive.
The revamped engine allows McAfee to change its threat ratings on the fly, although the procedure has an escape hatch built in, so if it falsely flags a site as malicious, users can override the rating and push through. There is no user override for malicious files. By using McAfee's labs, malware research, e-mail research, and Web research, Trombley said that "the goal is to tie together actors and sites."
The firewall has changed, too, as McAfee has upgraded its home consumer firewall to match the one the company markets to businesses.
McAfee's new interface refocuses its features in a top-down format, which stands out from the typical left-nav and tabs design. At the top of the vertical window sits a notification bar, as many other security suites have. McAfee's stands out for not only color-coding what your status is, but also adding in what that means. So the "Your computer is secure" message is bolstered by a secondary one, "No action required." This may seem like a redundant statement, but Trombley said that three years of researching, the new interface and testing the improved features concluded that the change was essential for cutting down on user confusion.
Available at any time, the security report presents all essential security data in an easy-to-read, printable format.

Just below the status bar are supplementary status notifications, color-coded as well for ease of use. Real-time scanning, Updates, Firewall, and Subscription status sit on the left of the interface, while the time of your next scheduled scan and a link to change it reside on the right. Click on any of the four categories and the right pane change to reveal links to drill deeper into your security status. The Real-time scanning link, for example, offers additional links to scan, change your scan settings, or adjust real-time settings. This aspect of the interface is most similar to its competitors, although the big font and simplified terminology are appreciated for streamlining tasks.
Below all the status notifications are the guts of the program. Separated into four categories are Virus and Spyware Protection, Web and E-mail Protection, and Parental Controls (on McAfee Internet Security and Total Protection). Each one opens a small group of links that open further information about your scan settings, firewall and anti-spam controls, network protections, and parent control options.
One thing that's notable about McAfee's updates is that none of the lesser products has its security features hamstrung in an effort to get more people to upgrade. What's available in McAfee Total Protection, the high-end version, is nearly identical to what's in the basic consumer McAfee AntiVirus Plus. What McAfee hopes users will find worth upgrading for is its included Mozy Online Backup, with McAfee Internet Security users getting 1GB of free storage and McAfee Total Protection users getting 2GB free; and parental controls.
The Home Network Defense feature is only available in McAfee Total Protection. It lets you see network settings of yours and other computers on your network, and to mark a computer on your home network as an intruder that will prevent it from accessing other computers on the network.

McAfee has discontinued several features from its previous versions. SystemGuards has been fully replaced by Artemis, and local backup has been replaced by Mozy. The Personal Information Protection, in which a user could enter personal data such as social security numbers or credit card information and expect to have its unintended dissemination over the Internet prevented was discontinued for not being effective. The PasswordVault for securing passwords on the Web has been replaced by browser-provided password protection, and the EasyNetwork system for local file sharing has been replaced by Windows 7's file-sharing system. This anticipates data just released, that in the few months that Windows 7 has been available to the public it has taken more than 10 percent of the operating system market share.
You should note that if you are switching to McAfee from another security vendor, it doesn't play nicely with other already-installed security apps and it will demand that you remove them before completing its own installation. Somewhat politely, it provides you with links to information on how to uninstall them.
As with most program overhauls, McAfee promises faster install times, faster scan times, more effective scans and a small memory footprint. CNET Labs hasn't finished testing the performance benchmarks against McAfee's competitors, and there's no third-party efficacy data yet available on McAfee 2010, but in empirical testing, the first fast scan finished in less than 10 minutes. Because of file marking, subsequent fast scans finished in less than one minute. Its first full scan took nearly 85 minutes.

According to McAfee, the first full scan will be 55 minutes faster on the 2010 version compared with the 2009 version. Subsequent full scans should be an astounding 120 minutes faster, from 135 minutes to 15 minutes. Also, according to McAfee, users should see their computers with the 2010 version start-up 300 percent faster than with the 2009 version, and that computer shutdowns with the new version should be 30 percent faster.
The most likely reason for the massive improvement in start-up time is that, like a few other security vendors, McAfee doesn't fully load all of its processes by the time that you can start using programs on your desktop. Trombley said that this doesn't affect the security of the computer, only that the McAfee interface isn't full accessible until about 90 seconds after the system tray icons appear.
Overall, though, McAfee's 2010 products felt light and didn't interfere with heavy computer use over a half-day of testing.
A one-computer license for McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2010 costs $39.99, while a three-computer license for McAfee Internet Security 2010 retails for $69.99, but it is currently available on McAfee's Web site for $20 off. McAfee Total Protection 2010 costs $79.99 for a three-computer license, but is also discounted currently by $20 on its Web site.
With almost 150,000 apps in the iTunes App Store, it shouldn't come as a surprise that some apps have slipped under my radar. Though it's embarrassing to admit, some of my great app discoveries happened only because I read about them long after their release, or I had a friend pull out their iPhone and say, "You mean you've never tried 'X'?" But I think that's part of what is so fun about owning an iPhone: you virtually never stop discovering new things you can do with it even if the app isn't brand new.
With that said, I've made a couple of recent app discoveries through friends that are worthy of checking out. Both have received recent upgrades, making them even better, so even if you have tried them, they may be worth a second look. Long-time readers have probably noticed that I always ask what your favorite apps are at the end of every post and now you know why; I'm always on the lookout for new (to me) apps!
This week's apps include a program that helps you take better photos and a game that some people may recognize from their local pub.

Gorillacam (Free) has been around for quite some time, but a recent update adds even more options for enhancing your iPhone photos. With Gorillacam you'll be able to take three-shot bursts to capture the best moment of an action-oriented scene, time-lapse sequences for interesting photo projects, self-timer shots so you can get into the picture, and several other types of shots. The app comes with a zoom slider for close-ups and an intuitive interface for selecting the type of shot you want to take.
What make Gorillacam especially useful are the settings associated with each function of the app. You start by hitting the button on the far left to select from many different features, like the self-timer, time-lapse, and even antishake to keep your image clear. You also can use a level for precise shots, a grid to align your subject, and a feature that lets you press anywhere on the screen to initiate snapping a picture (great for holding out the iPhone to take a picture of you and a friend). Flip the appropriate switch to the on position to take that type of shot. Once you've selected the shot type, you can use a second button to adjust the parameters, like how many seconds between shots (time-lapse) or how long to wait before taking a shot (self-timer). Overall, if you've been looking for a good photo app with a self-timer or want to take your iPhone camera to the next level, Gorillacam is a great free option.

10 Pin Shuffle ($3.99) lets you play a 3D version of the popular pub game Shuffleboard, with the added capability to bowl and play an interesting game of Poker all on the Shuffleboard surface. The 3D graphics are silky smooth and the physics make the game feel very realistic even within the confines of the iPhone screen. Set up your shot by touching the screen to move the puck from side to side, then adjust the angle by touching and dragging on the arrows above your puck. When you're ready, touch and hold the puck and use a controlled forward motion to send it down the surface of the Shuffleboard table. Perfecting your shot takes some getting used to, but fortunately 10 Pin Shuffle offers beginning and advanced control settings to make things easier or more realistic depending on your skill level. You can play against a computer-controlled opponent (four skill levels) or you can play with a friend on the same iPhone or with two iPhones over the same Wi-Fi network.
10 Pin Shuffle would be good enough with the Shuffleboard game alone, but it also works surprisingly well to play 10 frames of bowling using the same control scheme with pins set up at the end of the playing surface. The game also includes a Poker game tied to the bowling game, with each player receiving a card for a strike or spare. The object is to make the best five-card Poker hand possible before the end of 10 frames of bowling. Overall, 10 Pin Shuffle does a great job with the classic pub game of Shuffleboard using beautiful 3D graphics, realistic physics, and challenging AI to keep you coming back for more. The extra games are just the icing on the cake.

We go over some of our observations in the First Look video here, pointing out that extensions, in particular, are the browser's most notable innovation for Firefox mobile.
There are some limitations to the way Firefox handles the add-ons screens. For a start, the search engine icons you see when you begin a search (for Google, Wikipedia, or so on) count as pre-installed add-ons. That makes removing them easy, but it also takes up space in the add-ons manager, which is knock against Firefox for Maemo since maximizing screen real estate is the gold standard of the mobile experience. In this case, that precious space should be devoted exclusively to showing off add-ons.
So far, new add-ons are hard to find. Firefox mobile surfaces five recommended extensions at a time; expect the YouTube Enabler and Weave Sync to be at the top of a newcomer's list. Although there is a search bar, there's no way to browse the add-on catalog from the device. Your best bet is to discover what you want from the online catalog, which is clearly less than ideal for mobile users. Mozilla's Firefox developers might consider creating one screen for managing add-ons you already have, and another for discovering new ones, just like with NoScript, Adblock Plus, and TwitterBar.
We took some time with the Weave Sync extension in particular. Weave Sync is Mozilla's syncing add-on for tabs, history, and so on. Though it works among multiple computers, it was also envisioned to help mobile Firefox users quickly access tabs and search history without typing. You'll naturally need Weave installed on your desktop and mobile to get the two talking. We learned the hard way on a loaner Nokia N900 that your phone's clock has to be spot-on for many add-ons to work.
Weave Sync stores the encrypted data on its servers, which means the computer doesn't have to be on for you to access desktop content. However, since Weave rightly syncs tabs and bookmarks on its own only periodically, you had better manually sync those tabs if you want to be sure you can pick up on mobile where you left off on the desktop.
Where else does Firefox mobile need attention? Letting you optionally lock down a home page that loads each time you open the app, and accessing the download manager and remote desktop tabs before you load a URL. Text search and copy and paste are other features in Opera Mini and Opera mobile that we'd like to see in Firefox mobile. Performance speed and reliable Flash support are other areas that need work to help turn Firefox mobile from a nifty experiment into a viable multiplatform mobile browser.
Mozilla on Friday pulled two programs from its Firefox browser add-on site for containing malware. Sothink Web Video Downloader 4.0 and all versions of Master Filer were found to contain Trojan horse code aimed at Windows users.
In a blog post, Mozilla stated that the Master Filer add-on was able to bypass AMO's security tests.
Mozilla user CatThief discovered the threat, it said. And when Mozilla added two more security checks to its vetting process and rescanned its entire catalog, it discovered that version 4 of the Sothink Web Video Downloader also contained a Trojan horse program. Sothink Web Video Downloader contained Win32.LdPinch.gen, and Master Filer contained Win32.Bifrose.32.Bifrose.
Master Filer was removed from Mozilla's Firefox add-on site on January 25, and the Sothink video downloader was removed on Tuesday. CNET Download.com ceased hosting the Sothink add-on on Friday before noon.
Sothink Web Video Download 5.5.90819 had been a mildly popular Firefox add-on at Download.com, receiving 697 downloads in the past week and 63,716 downloads since it was first added to the site in June 2007.
Because the Trojan horse programs are tied to Firefox, Mozilla warns, host computers won't be infected until Firefox started. Uninstalling either add-on is only part of the solution, if the infection has already attacked the host computer. Mozilla recommends that users who suspect that they are infected use one of the following security applications to sweep and clean their computers after uninstalling the threatening add-on:

It's not up there with the Pixar classics, but the anarchic sense of humour
of this computer-animated film from Sony Pictures puts it a cut above most
Computer animated films have tended, over the last decade, to fall into one
of two groups: truly excellent works, usually produced by Pixar, and mediocre
fare packed with notable actors providing voice work. Cloudy with a Chance of
Meatballs doesn’t quite edge its way in alongside Toy Story, The Incredibles and
Wall-E, but it’s far better than most star-studded nonsense.
The plot is fairly straightforward: a young man named Flint, faced with a
life of boredom in the run-down town of Swallow Falls, invents a machine that
makes it rain food, with unforeseen consequences. There’s also a romantic
sub-plot concerning the arrival of a would-be weather reporter, Sam Sparks.
What lifts the film above mere multiplex-fodder, though, is not the quality
of the animation or voice acting, although the former is superb and the latter
fine with a notable turn from Bruce Campbell, but the sheer anarchic barrage of
humour that surrounds the plot.
Like a good episode of the Simpsons, the story is assaulted with jokes from
all sides, with one-liners and background sight gags everywhere. Even the most
minor characters, such as the taciturn weather channel cameraman, get some good
gags, and nothing is cast aside, as even incidental comments and objects from
the first half of the film come back later to get laughs – witness, for example,
the return of the television on legs during a looting scene.
Overall even this torrent of good-natured humour can’t quite lift Cloudy With
a Chance of Meatballs up to the standard of the very best animated films, but it
is nonetheless a wonderfully creative film worth a watch.
This Blu-ray edition is notably good value. As well as several short
documentaries, all presented in HD, there are animatics (rough, sketch-like
animations used early in the animation process), extended scenes and interactive
games – although those with PC-based Blu-ray players might find, like us, that
these interactive sections do not work on their equipment. The Blu-ray disc is
also sold with a DVD in the packet, allowing those with DVD players to “upgrade”
to the high-definition version later.

Turn paper documents into fully editable, searchable files
Converting paper documents into electronic ones needs two things: a scanner
or camera, and optical character recognition
(OCR)
software.
Once you have a document as a computer file, though, it needs to be
effectively editable for easy retrieval. Paperport is designed to do both these
things and is just about the only document manager available at a reasonable
price for the home or small business customer.
Paperport 12 offers a simple process in which each document you scan or load
is shown as a
thumbnail
of its first page. It works with whatever scanner is connected to the computer,
either a standalone flatbed model or the scanner section of a combined
printer/scanner. Choose the type of scan that's needed – black-and-white or
colour – and the software will automatically handle problems such as adjusting
the contrast and straightening the final image.
That's only the start, though. At the bottom of the Paperport screen are a
series of icons taken from the applications that it finds on the computer. If
you want to convert the scanned documents into
Word
or
PDF
format, drag the document icon over the appropriate program icon and the OCR
application converts it automatically.
Nuance makes the leading Omnipage OCR engine and the version included here
did a very good job with the test documents we tried coming through looking very
much like the originals, but with editable, searchable text. Having a searchable
PDF file, where each page has text rather than being scanned pictures of pages,
is a lot more useful and, as a bonus, takes up less room on the hard disk. A
full version of Nuance’s PDF Reader software is included.
Paperport 12 works not only with scanned images but can also handle pictures
of documents taken using a digital camera. The software can correct an image
skewed left or right, forward or back in three dimensions. Using a camera can be
a lot easier than carrying round a scanner so if you have to scan documents when
away from a computer this is a bonus.
The program can be used for categorisation and filing of documents, offering
29 different colour tags to help organise the work. It can also create PDF files
from mixed content, so you can put together a PDF containing, for example, a
Word document, an Excel spreadsheet and photos.

Use your iPhone as a driving aid
Like many modern smartphones, Apple’s iPhone 3G and
3GS
have built-in GPS
satellite
navigation systems and can show on a map where they are located.
This Tomtom program, downloadable for £60 from
Apple’s
App Store, turns it into a full-blown satellite navigation system for
driving.
The program includes everything you would expect to find in a mid-range
satellite navigation system. You can find locations by address or postcode – it
has a full seven-digit postcode search – or look for points of interest such as
a nearby petrol station.
Also, conveniently, you can navigate to any addresses stored in the phone’s
contact list. Once the destination is found the software shows a 3D map of your
location and provides spoken turn-by-turn warnings. As usual these can be given
in a selection of voices and languages, and there’s a night mode for the
display.
We tried several journeys with and without the car kit, and found that the
Tomtom software worked well, guiding us to our destinations without trouble and
recalculating reasonably quickly when we were forced off-route.
There are, however, a few extras required. For one you’ll need some kind of
cradle to prop the phone up in a suitable position near the windscreen. Equally
importantly you’ll need a car charger for the iPhone, as using the GPS sensor
drains its battery enormously.
You can buy both together in the form of Tomtom’s own Car Kit. This includes
a windscreen mount, a louder speaker and a charger. It also has an extra GPS
sensor, which makes the application available to iPod Touch users, since the
device doesn’t have a GPS sensor built in. The kit costs £100, though, making
the complete app-plus-car-kit system fairly expensive at £160.
If you already have a suitable cradle and power supply for long journeys, the
£60 price makes this software a bargain, against the price of buying a
standalone satellite-navigation device. Add in the cost of the car kit if
needed, though, and it begins to look a bit steep.

A spiritual sequel to the action-comedy films
Few video games are based on a movie that’s over 25 years old, but that’s no
bad thing when the movie in question is Ghostbusters, one of the most iconic
films of the 1980s, and the game reunites all the key cast members from the
movie.
Ghostbusters: The Video Game is a completely new episode of supernatural
tomfoolery, set a couple of years after the events of
Ghostbusters
II.
The voiceovers are all provided by the film’s original actors: Bill Murray,
Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson, and as with the films, the humorous
script is penned by Akroyd and Ramis.
Unfortunately you can’t play as Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz or Egon Spengler.
Instead, the game sees you assuming the role of a new rookie Ghostbuster, just
as another paranormal threat hits New York City. The plot involves the
re-awakening of Gozer, the malevolent entity from the first movie, which is how
the game manages to bring some familiar situations, environments and bad guys
from the films, such as the
Stay
Puft Marshmallow Man, during the early levels.
Ghostbusters is essentially a
third-person
shooter with a slight twist; all the shooting involves using the famous
proton pack, with a variety of different modes and as expected, the streams
mustn’t be crossed. The game’s control system is easy to pick up, but those used
to the pinpoint accuracy of most modern shooters will find wielding weapons like
the Blast Stream and Slime Blower fairly clunky in comparison. This is the point
of the game, though, and as with the movies, the best situations in Ghostbusters
are the most chaotic and silly.
As a game, Ghostbusters is far from perfect. In addition to zapping ghosts as
part of the plot, you also have to deal with the game’s irritating gremlins that
pop up now and again to spoil the fun. For example, characters occasionally seem
to get ‘stuck’ for no apparent reason. The game’s visuals are also inconsistent,
with some noticeably bland textures.
However, Ghostbusters is witty, fun and captures the spirit of the films
well, and that in itself is worth the admission price.

An uninspiring game that's not quite as good as the film
No box office smash is complete without a low-quality video game tie-in. True
to form, the story behind Avatar: The Game is wafer-thin and has little to do
with the plot of the film itself.
You play a signals expert named Ryder who has just landed on the planet
Pandora. For reasons that are not adequately explained in the game, Pandora’s
human colonists are able to transfer their consciousness to ‘avatars’ of
Pandora’s indigenous population, the Na’vi.
After a series of humdrum, run-and-fetch missions as both a human and a
10-foot-tall blue alien, you suddenly have to make a choice between siding with
your own people or staying in the avatar and joining the Na’vi, effectively
offering you two completely different games in one.
In either case, however, the game continues to drip-feed uninspiring,
forgettable missions (most of which involve fetching something) until you either
reach the equally forgettable conclusion or give up playing altogether –
whichever comes first.
The only genuinely interesting thing about Avatar: The Game is that, like its
cinematic sibling, it features support for stereoscopic 3D to further enhance
its already vibrant visuals. However, to benefit from this, you will need to
invest in a lot of specialised equipment, including a compatible
Nvidia
graphics card, special glasses and a 120Hz-capable display.
Its 3D capabilities aside, Avatar: The Game’s crowning achievement is the way
in which it takes the astonishing spectacle of the movie and reduces it to an
ultimately mundane gaming experience.

A Swiss Army knife for music and video files
Media Suite 8 is a collection of programs for viewing and editing media files
and creating CD, DVD or Blu-ray discs.
It includes PowerDVD 9 and Powerdirector 8 for watching and editing videos,
Mediashow 5 for organising photos, Wave Editor for editing audio and Power
Producer 5 for capturing video from a camcorder. There are also tools for
backing up data, copying discs, printing disc labels, converting audio to the
MP3
format, ripping audio CDs and sharing media online.
The application launcher saves users from having to memorise what each
application does and minimises time spent digging through menus. It provides a
long list of tasks that users might want to perform, such as 'play a movie
disc'. Select a task and Media Suite automatically loads the relevant
application, most of the time with the correct window open and ready to go.
While you may not own a camcorder or a Blu-ray recorder, there are plenty of
tools in Media Suite 8 for more general use, often with extras that aren’t
usually found in free alternatives. For example the True Theatre HD feature of
PowerDVD 9 can enhance the visual quality of DVDs by
upscaling
the video so it looks better on
high-definition
screens. Mediashow can automatically locate images on your
hard
disk by selecting one person’s face – the program will mark all the other
photos it finds with the same face.
You can directly upload photos to Facebook or Flickr from Media Suite 8, with
options to resize
Flickr
images or set the privacy options for your
Facebook
photos directly. Uploading video to
Youtube
was just as straightforward.
There are three versions of Media Suite 8 available, all containing the same
applications. The basic Centra package omits such features as
Blu-ray
support (the Pro version in the middle can create such discs but can’t play them
back while the highest Ultra one can do both). It also can't be used to view
high-definition video files.
While these are nice to have, most of the rest of the package is intact, and
despite the low price point, the Centra version is still full of tools to keep
on top of your digital media, and is therefore outstanding value for money,
especially for those who don’t use Blu-ray discs.
Some of the applications, for example Mediashow, may not have as many image
editing options as more expensive dedicated programs such as Adobe Photoshop
Elements, but the basic tasks used by most people such as cropping and
red-eye
reduction are all there.
It's hard to see what else could realistically be added at this price, and
most importantly, all of the applications are easy to use.

Take the sweat out of restructuring your hard disk
If your computer appears to have more than one
hard
disk, it may in fact just have a single physical disk that’s divided into
two or more
partitions.
Any disk can be divided into several partitions – they’re not physical
divisions, but the computer sees them as completely separate disks.
Avanquest’s Partition Commander 11, as the name implies, lets users work with
partitions, change their sizes, creating new ones, removing old ones and it can
even help with installing different
operating
systems on each.
The program has been designed for use by both beginners and more advanced
users, and includes a number of
wizards
to carry out the most common tasks. So, for example, if you want to change the
size of a partition, select the disk in question and drag a slider on screen to
choose the new size. It would be good to have been able to type in an exact
figure, but this isn’t an option.
If you’re confident with this type of software, the full version of the
interface is easy to use and well organised. Once you’ve set up what you want to
do, the program restarts Windows to complete the process. You can also run it
from the CD itself which is less pretty but makes for quicker operation.
Partition Commander 11 is compatible with
Windows
7, as well as with
Vista
and
XP,
and can handle a variety of filing systems, including the Apple HFS system
that’s found on current Mac computers. Although the program only runs under
Windows, it can work on a Mac through the appropriate software. It can also help
make a Windows computer into what’s called a
dual-boot
PC, so that it can load either Linux or Windows, for example, with the user
choosing each time the computer starts.
The program can also handle backup of single partitions or full hard disks
and Avanquest has included a basic version of its Autosave 2 backup utility,
which automatically duplicates every file you save in a second backup location,
such as on another partition.
The real snag with Partition Commander 11 is that you’re rarely likely to use
it. While it’s very useful when you need to change the partitions on a disk,
most people don’t need to do this regularly, if ever. The program is only good
for one installation, too, unlike many utility and programs which come with
licences to use them on three or five computers.

An affordable and easy-to-use desktop-publishing program
Greenstreet’s Publisher isn’t the most sophisticated desktop-publishing
program available for home users or small businesses, but it’s affordable and
easy to use, and well worth considering for simpler publishing projects.
The program provides a wide range of tools for designing and printing several
different kinds of document. When Publisher is started its Startup screen
provides three main options.
More experienced users can just create a blank page and work on the page
layout from scratch, but there’s a selection of built-in tutorials that will
guide beginners through the basics of document design, along with a collection
of templates to help get started.
The templates cover a variety of documents from business cards to
newsletters, posters, and folding leaflets. Users can alter the appearance of
any template very easily by choosing one of the many pre-defined colour schemes
or font settings.
However, it’s a little disappointing that most of the templates for documents
such as newsletters will only create just one or two pages. You can use the Add
Page function to create longer, multi-page documents, but the user is still left
to do much of the layout work themselves. This means that Publisher is really
best suited to shorter documents.
But within that limitation Publisher provides plenty of design tools for
users to work with. As well as basic tools for creating a page layout containing
multi-column text and graphics, it includes a wide range of useful extras.
There’s a simple spreadsheet that allows users to insert tables of numerical
data and graphs and charts, a ‘powertext’ tool for creating eye-catching 3D text
and logos, and a mail-merge option that can be used for printing out mailshots
and group letters. There’s even an option for printing barcode labels containing
product information.
Our only other complaint is that there’s no printed manual included with the
program, and wading through the on-screen help files to find information about
specific features was a bit frustrating at times.
However, at just over £30, Greenstreet Publisher is still good value if you
need a little help designing simple documents for a small business or a club.

Protection from a wide range of online threats
Founded in 2003, PC Tools is best known for its Spyware Doctor utility.
In recent years, the company has attempted to build on its success with the
spyware-killing
product by combining it with anti-virus capabilities, and Spyware Doctor with
Antivirus 2010 is the latest version.
All types of malicious programs are scanned for, including
spyware,
adware,
viruses
and
worms,
while the software also protects against threats that come up when browsing the
web, such as
phishing
websites and rogue
pop-ups.
One of the few security features it doesn’t include is a
firewall
– for this, you’ll need to buy PC Tools Internet Security, which costs an extra
£10.
In general, PC Tools has done a good job in terms of usability. The home
screen is easy to understand and gives a quick overview of what security
services are running and when the last update took place. Things get more
complicated if you click on the Intelliguard button, which displays the various
individual security components, and the software uses a lot of technical jargon
without fully explaining what it means.
Although most users will simply want to leave everything switched on, a
comprehensive glossary of technical terms would have been good. We were also
disappointed to find the full manual is online-only, which isn’t much use if a
virus has disrupted your internet connection.
When we tested the software
(Windows
7,
Vista
and
XP
are all supported) we were a little surprised to find the initial full scan took
just under one hour. Subsequent scans using the Intelliscan engine were much
faster and took an average of four minutes.
However, Intelliscan only checks running processes and commonly-infected
locations, so full scans will still need to be run from time to time. On
completion, the software details any threats along with an indication of their
severity. After a full scan it found four threats and 221 infections on our test
PC, though it was honest enough to admit that all were relatively tame in terms
of the risks they posed. It’s then just a case of clicking a button to clean and
remove them.
As with other modern security software, emphasis here is on real-time
scanning using the program’s updated Threatfire scanning engine. Unlike scans
that rely on detecting threats by comparing them against a known list, real-time
scans monitor for suspicious behaviour, in theory protecting against new and
unknown viruses.
With a wide range of security features, Spyware Doctor with Antivirus is good
value at £40, which includes one year’s updates and a license that allows it to
be installed on up to three computers.
However, it’s worth checking out
Norton
Internet Security 2010, which at the time of writing is available for £35
(three-user license) and includes a firewall.

The rally series heads off the beaten track
The great man himself may have passed into legend, but a small part of Colin
McRae lives on in the long-running series of racing games that bears his name.
The latest entry in the 11-year-old franchise is, however, a very different
proposition from previous realistic rally simulations.
Dirt 2 drops most of the authenticity in favour of a more accessible ‘extreme
sport’ approach.
True point-to-point rally racing forms only a small part of the game’s career
mode, which mixes up a variety of different off-road racing disciplines to the
tune of a high-energy rock soundtrack. For the most part this is a success.
Arcade-like head-to-head rallycross, dune buggy and stadium races are
exhilarating additions and help to make the multiplayer element of the game more
enjoyable.
As ever, the handling feels very natural, but the effects of vehicle damage
are relatively forgiving and can be turned off altogether. And if you make a
mistake, it’s even possible to rewind time and carry on like it never happened.
The PC release of Dirt 2 is notable for being one of the first titles to
support Microsoft’s new
DirectX
11 graphics standard. Since there are currently only a handful of DirectX 11
graphics cards available, this is something few will currently be able to take
advantage of.
Even without the DirectX 11 effects switched on though, the game’s visuals
are stunning.
Purists may bemoan Dirt 2’s lack of realism but the game’s environments,
tracks and licensed car models themselves are all incredibly true to life.

A true fighter ace or just another fly-by-night?
We will preface this review by saying that if you are looking for a complex,
realistic flight simulator, then this game probably isn't quite what you are
after.
Heroes over Europe offers two modes, Arcade and Professional, but neither
feels particularly true to the experience of being behind the throttle of a
military plane. Make no mistake, this game is all about the action.
Heroes over Europe is a direct sequel to the well-received 2005 game Heroes
of the Pacific and gameplay is largely similar. As one of three different pilots
you must take to the skies in a series of vintage aircraft and dogfight your way
through 14 missions set in World War II and beyond.
On a fairly new PC, the plane models and environmental graphics should look
very good. And, despite some embarrassing dialogue, the soundtrack is effective.
Typical missions involve machine-gunning it out with enemy planes among the
clouds, protecting or bombing specific targets and disabling ground-to-air
defences.
For the first few levels this can be quite entertaining, but it soon becomes
clear that Heroes over Europe has little else to offer.
There's a one-shot kill system that can be fun to pull off and a selection of
different planes to unlock, but aircraft don't seem to handle all that
differently to each other.
The relatively short single-player campaign suffers from being unimaginative
and repetitious.
Online multiplayer is available but, overall, the plain fact is that there
are plenty of other similar games out there that do a much better job than this.

Blurring the boundary between games and films
The term ‘blockbuster’ is one we normally associate with films but it’s now
becoming an increasingly apt description for many major game releases too.
This especially holds true when the game in question enjoys lavish launch
parties, courts the kind of tabloid attention usually reserved for Hollywood
A-listers and makes more money in a single week than many of the
highest-grossing movies of all time over their entire box office run.
Like its 2007 predecessor, Modern Warfare 2 (MW2) is a
first-person
shooter that eschews the Call of Duty series’ traditional WWII-based
backdrop in favour of a bang-up-to-date military setting.
The game’s single-player mode puts you in behind the rifle butt of several
different soldiers over a variety of fictional present-day engagements around
the globe, from dusty Middle-Eastern side streets to snowy Russian gulags and
even suburban America.
The story is short and faintly absurd, but Modern Warfare 2 is all about set
pieces and there are moments of genuine shock and awe throughout the campaign.
Varied environments and objectives also mean that gameplay can often be a little
more tactical than that of the average shooter.
In multi-player mode Modern Warfare comes into its own. Again, there is
nothing especially revolutionary about its online or network play, but factors
such as a diverse assortment of weaponry and well-designed maps all gel to
provide a thoroughly addictive multi-player experience.
Of particular note are the game’s two-player co-op missions, some of which
task the first player with controlling ground forces while the other acts as air
support.
Hype, controversy and commercial success aside, Modern Warfare 2 is a fairly
typical example of much mainstream entertainment in that it delivers plenty of
big-scale bang without bringing anything groundbreaking to the table.
This is not intended to be a criticism, though. The developers have clearly
identified what worked about the first Modern Warfare title and have simply
built upon it, delivering a sequel that more than matches its predecessor for
thrills, spills and pyrotechnics.
It might not be particularly innovative, but Modern Warfare 2 is probably the
most exhilarating blockbuster you are likely to see on any screen – big or small
– at the moment.

Half-shooter, half-RPG
Every year the shelves fill with identikit
first-person
shooters, many of which seem happy to blithely recycle the same tired old
ideas without the slightest attempt at innovation.
Borderlands bravely endeavours to buck this trend by applying a number of
twists to the genre, most notably with its distinctive art style and a variety
of gameplay elements that you might normally associate with
role-playing
games (RPGs).
The game's sci-fi storyline takes place on far-flung planet Pandora; a once
prosperous colony that has descended into an anarchic wasteland full of monsters
and mercenaries. Your character is a fortune hunter who arrives on Pandora in
search of a fabled vault of treasure.
At its core, Borderlands is an action-led shooting game not unlike, say,
Fear
2. Rather than blasting your way through linear levels, however, Borderlands
offers you an open world to explore – first on foot and later in vehicles – with
quest-like missions to complete. You can choose between four characters, each
with their own upgradeable skills. An RPG-style levelling system allows you to
earn experience and skill points by completing missions and defeating enemies.
Similarly to many dungeon-crawlers, Borderlands also offers plenty of
opportunity to loot crates, piles of rubbish and even toilets for cash,
ammunition and other items that you can either use yourself or sell. A clever
random weapon generator means that there are literally millions of different
rifles, pistols, shotguns, rocket launchers, grenades and so on to uncover, all
with their own set of vital statistics.
Borderlands certainly looks different, thanks to its unusual cartoony
visuals. But, despite all its interesting ideas, the game isn't quite as
revolutionary as its makers would like to think. Like many other action games,
it fails to provide anything resembling a decent plot, for example.
However, if you're bored of World War II or alien shooters, this Mad
Max-inspired mix of genres offers something a little more original, especially
when played online in co-operative mode with up to three other players.

Role-playing returns to its roots
A role-playing game
(RPG)
similar to
Dungeons
and Dragons, Dragon Age: Origins is also available for the consoles, but
there’s no doubt that the PC release is the definitive version.
It has a far deeper level of visual detail than the home console editions and
much more refined control and inventory systems, both of which suggest Dragon
Age was originally designed with the mouse and keyboard in mind.
It’s a profound and generous game, too. The main quest is a marathon that
will take players weeks to finish. And, should you tackle all the game’s side
quests and alternate beginnings/endings, you could easily find yourself playing
for many months to come.
Whether you will actually want to invest this amount of time in the game,
however, very much depends on whether you’re willing to look past some potential
shortcomings.
Although the story begins differently depending on the race you choose, its
hackneyed tale of humans, dwarves, elves and wizards banding together to defeat
an ancient evil will be embarrassingly familiar to anyone acquainted with
fantasy fiction. In fairness, the plot goes deeper than that, presenting the
player with some interesting moral quandaries. But it doesn’t help that a large
part of the game involves wading through endless reams of monotonous dialogue
delivered by some oddly unattractive-looking character models.
As an RPG, Dragon Age: Origins is relatively orthodox in its approach. The
focus is on turn-based combat, statistics, levelling up, collecting loot and so
on. These game mechanics are all used in some way by other RPGs. This is not
necessarily a bad thing and, by and large, it plays similar to other games
Bioware
has produced, so if you enjoyed
Baldur’s
Gate,
Star
Wars: Knights of the Old Republic or
Mass
Effect, then you should feel at home here too.
Dragon Age: Origins is a satisfyingly sophisticated RPG with an agreeably
traditional feel and an epic sense of scale.
But, thanks to a derivative plot, some pompous dialogue and an occasionally
misguided visual style, this game could prove to be too heavy-going for all but
the most dedicated of role players.

Work together to hold back the zombie horde
Left 4 Dead 2 is a survival-horror
first-person
shooter, where four souls must fend their way through legions of undead to
survive, a setting that references cult zombie flicks such as
Dawn
of the Dead.
You and three other human players (or computer-controlled
bots)
use whatever weapons are nearby to blow them away in order to reach safety. The
sequel brings new maps, a new cast of characters, more weapons such as a grenade
launcher and chainsaw, and new types of zombie to the mix. The result is a more
polished and enjoyable game than the original.
Rather than a linear progression from beginning to end, the game has five
chapters which don't have to be played in order. On the harder difficulty
settings ammo is limited, and you cant jump into every situation with all guns
blazing.
The game is at its best when you have a good team, ideally calling out the
location of weapons and ammo, and co-ordinating strategies to deal with the next
wave of infected. You can play on your own but that's missing the point of Left
4 Dead 2, it's probably the best co-operative gaming experience around.
Most zombie games are intensely violent, and Left 4 Dead 2 earns its 18
certificate with blood-soaked walls and dismembered body parts.
The biggest criticism is that the tweaks and extra content feel more like an
expansion pack than a full-blown sequel.
It's very much more of the same, but anyone who liked the original will love
Left 4 Dead 2.
