Server Side Includes. SSI

SSI (Server Side Includes) are directives that are placed in HTML pages, and evaluated on the server while the pages are being served. They let you add dynamically generated content to an existing HTML page, without having to serve the entire page via a CGI program, or other dynamic technology.  SSI, Server Side Include commands that can be included in web pages that are processed by the web server when a user requests a file. The command takes the form <!--#include virtual="/filename"-->. For example, a common use for SSI commands is to insert the date or last modified date on a file. Generally this web page will require the .shtml extension to the page. This page, and possibly all the pages in that directory may need to be parsed by SSI this could slow down page loads. SSI may be able to be set via the .htaccess Files to accept .html extension.

SSI usually require .shtml filname extensions.
