What is "mole" reporting? SpamCop Mole reporting was an experiment that presented many problems in the operations and integrity of SpamCop, so is mostly being disabled. Reports from users who choose to be mole reporters will count only in the statistics and aggregate counts. Reports are not sent and can only be viewed by SpamCop administrators. Mole reports do not count in the stats used to determine listing and delisting of IP addresses in the SpamCop Blocking List. As spam defenses and spammers become more sophisticated, many smart spammers have developed very sophisticated defenses against being detected. One of the spammer's strategies is to quickly and effectively remove anyone from their mailing lists who files a spam complaint (until they want to get revenge, and then the use these "remove lists" differently). This is generally (although not always) good for the person filing the complaint, but it is bad for spam defense in general, since these activists are the only ones identifying the problem. By removing the "trouble makers", spammers too often slip "under the radar" and appear to be legitimate senders, even though the majority (or entirety) of the victims don't want the mail (they are just the ones who don't bother to make waves). SPIM & SPIT (SPIM, SPam using Instant Messaging), is another new spamming technique, the difference in this case being that the spam is delivered through Instant Messaging rather than email. It's not as common as email spam. According to a report from Ferris Research, 500 million IM spam were sent in 2003, twice the level of 2002. As it becomes more common, spim could affect businesses in the same way that email spam does now, creating security problems and costing time and money. SPIM stands for Spam over Internet Telephony. It's essentially like spam email, only rather than getting unwanted messages in your inbox, they're left on your voicemail. It can happen if you're using a phone connected to the Internet, something more and more people are choosing to do. VoIP addresses or may hack into a computer used to route VoIP calls. And, because calls routed over IP are much more difficult to trace, there's a far greater potential for fraud.

DomainKeys: Proving and Protecting Email Sender Identity (Information by Yahoo) Email spoofing, (and Phishing) - the forging of another person's or company's email address to get users to trust and open a message - is one of the biggest challenges facing both the Internet community and anti-spam technologists today. Without sender authentication, verification, and traceability, email providers can never know for certain if a message is legitimate or forged and will therefore have to continually make educated guesses on behalf of their users on what to deliver, what to block, and what to quarantine, in the pursuit of the best possible user experience.

Spam is the term given to junk email. (unsolicited emails, un-request emails). Sometimes known as Email bombing.
Sending an excessive amount of unwanted email to another party
Spam is the sending of many copies of the same message, in an attempt to force the message on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it.
Most Spam is commercial advertising, often for dubious products, (or plain illegal emails trying to trick people out of money), get-rich-quick schemes, drug, pharmacy, gambling or sex related or quasi-legal services.
Spam costs the sender very little to send. Therefore just one result is usually worth the time effort and expense for them.
They generally operate outside, (or boarder-line inside), the law. Quite often they may operated form other country's where legal action is a lot harder to take against them.
Should I hit "remove" or attempt to email the Spammer? NO! Some Spam may comes with instructions on how to "remove yourself from our list". Yet, more often than not, the remove instructions don't work.
Requesting "remove yourself from our list" or replying to the Spammer just confirms that your email address is live and active so they can sell, (yes that's right make money by selling your email address), to other Spammer and post you even more Spam. Any reply to Spammers, or even clicking on links in emails, verify your email address to the Spammer. They put it on their "premium" CD full of email addresses and sell it to the next Spammer for even more money.
Quite often Spammer use false email addresses or email address of other users, including those of official sites belonging to well known companies such as banks and major websites.
DO NOT CLICK ON ANY LINKS IN A SPAMMER'S MESSAGE.
Links in email addresses may be tracked and confirm your email address is active, (may be sold to send more Spam to). Also some links may point to illegal sites. This applies Phishing emails which may look genuine and have genuine looking links in them. Phishing schemes are often used for identity theft and other ways to defraud you.
Spammers send hundreds of millions of emails to their servers a day trying to guess valid email addresses.
Don't sign up for stuff online using your real email address. If you sign up for newsletters, websites, freebies, etc. You could to start getting Spam.
Only give out your real email address once a company has proven they can be trusted with it.
Don't display your email address on a website in text form. Instead of posting it in normal form use "mayuse AT domainsomething.com". That way a human can read it, but the email address harvesting software used by Spammers can't.

The CAN-SPAM Act: A Compliance Guide for Business. Do you use email in your business? The CAN-SPAM Act, a law that sets the rules for commercial email, establishes requirements for commercial messages, gives recipients the right to have you stop emailing them, and spells out tough penalties for violations. Despite its name, the CAN-SPAM Act doesn’t apply just to bulk email. It covers all commercial messages, which the law defines as “any electronic mail message the primary purpose of which is the commercial advertisement or promotion of a commercial product or service,” including email that promotes content on commercial websites. The law makes no exception for business-to-business email. That means all email – for example, a message to former customers announcing a new product line – must comply with the law.
