Thunderbolt smokes USB, FireWire with 10Gbps throughput. Clambed with fiber optic connections capable of up to 100Gbps bi-directional throughput. With two devices pushing data at the maximum rate, you could back up a full Blu-ray movie in 30 seconds, or sync 64GB of music to a portable device in about a minute. Copying the entire contents of the Library of Congress in digital form—approximately 20TB of data—would take about 35 minutes. Active optical cables, which use fiber for data transmission and copper for up to 10W of power, can be "tens of meters" in length. Passive fiber-only cables could potentially be hundreds of meters long. These lengths enable more flexible positioning between devices and computers instead of relying on specialized connections.
Apple Thunderbolt is a revolutionary I/O technology that supports high-resolution displays and high-performance data devices through a single, compact port. Thunderbolt I/O technology provides native support for Mini DisplayPort displays. It also supports DisplayPort, DVI, HDMI, and VGA displays through the use of existing adapters. So you can connect your Apple LED Cinema Display or other existing display, along with multiple high-speed devices, all from a single port.

Intel Thunderbolt 'Rollout' Won't Be Lightning Fast. Ziller, who was once chairman of the USB Implementor's Forum, said that USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt were "complementary." "We don't see this replacing USB," he said. 'We see it as complementary to USB... Intel will fully support and work with that technology." It's a bit more unclear whether Thunderbolt would replace FireWire. At the present, even the future P1394d iteration is expected to push FireWire to 6.4 Gbps, far slower than Thunderbolt. And Thunderbolt can also drive a monitor, while FireWire can not. But FireWire also has an established presence in the A/V products normally associated with Apple's video-editing products.
