The USB 3.0 Promoter Group, (USB.org), was formed to create a SuperSpeed USB personal interconnect that can deliver over 10 times the speed of todays connection. The technology will target fast sync-and-go transfer applications in the PC, consumer and mobile segments that are necessary as digital media become ubiquitous and file sizes increase up to and beyond 25 Gigabytes. USB (Universal Serial Bus) 3.0 will create a backward-compatible standard with the same ease-of-use and plug and play capabilities of previous USB technologies. Targeting over 10x performance increase, the technology will draw from the same architecture of wired USB. In addition, the USB 3.0 specification will be optimized for low power and improved protocol efficiency.
USB Implementers Forum, Inc. is a non-profit corporation founded by the group of companies that developed the Universal Serial Bus specification. The USB-IF was formed to provide a support organization and forum for the advancement and adoption of Universal Serial Bus technology. The Forum facilitates the development of high-quality compatible USB peripherals (devices), and promotes the benefits of USB and the quality of products that have passed compliance testing.
SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.0) will deliver over targeted 10x the speed of today's Hi-Speed USB connections. The technology targets fast PC sync-and-go transfer of applications, to meet the demands of CE and mobile segments focused on high density digital content and media.

USB 3.0 Can Reach as Fast as 25Gbps
Even though USB 3.0's top speed is 4.8Gbps, we may not have to wait for USB 4.0 to reach even faster speed. According to Jeff Ravencraft - the chairman of USB Promoter Group - was discussing the possibility of increasing the speed of USB 3.0 without a complete rewrite such as USB 3.0 itself and 2.0. He claimed USB 3.0 was designed with transmission protocol to support speed of up to 25Gbps. While he couldn't specify when USB 3.0 (aka. SuperSpeed USB) will hit that mark, he did imply the current 4.8Gbps speed will be enough for the next few years (likely within 5). It's very possible that SSDs will be mainstream by then, and they are going to easily saturate USB 3.0 bandwidth. Perhaps we might only see a minor upgrade to USB 3.1 yet speed boost could be 3 to 4 times faster than what USB 3.0 currently offers. |

Concrete USB (Also other Unusual and original USB drives) The Memory Weights USB from Shu-Chun Hsiao has to be the coolest and cleverest USB stick I have ever seen. And I have seen the ninja star USB. The Memory Weights USB is literally worth its weight in data. The amount of memory the stick stores is about approximate to its weight in grams. Brilliant! The stick is made of concrete, which means that it can be thrown in a cement mixer if an emergency sidewalk is called for. I love the cleverness of this creation. I wonder what Shu-Chun Hsiao will think of next?

USB Loses Connection to External Hard Drive. If your USB looses/drops Connection to External Hard Drive this may help. Notes and updates of trying to fix this:- I wasn't even using the USB drive and even after using this method it lost and reconnected itself for no reason I can see. So using the method here fails for me. It may help for you but I doubt it, sorry. I have tried moving the drive so that it is powered via a UPS but the problem still occurs, so it doesn't appear to be the power supply. I noticed when moving the computer the USB drive disconnected and reconnected but moving the cable and connector has not reproduced this issue. Sill testing will try a different USB port soon as possible. Just tried different USB. I noticed that moving the USB plug vigorously did cause disconnect/reconnect. I unplugged it blow into the plug, (will try Isopropyl alcohol later if this still fails), then vigorously moved and it did NOT disconnect/reconnect, for now... (Some times contacts can get dirt on so a few unplugs/plug in's may help). NO... This blow/plug/in/out/in Failed. (After some time it went mad, on/off/on/off quickly). |
