VoIP: Voice over Internet Protocol, Telephone calls over the Internet. Hardware and software that enables people to use the Internet as the transmission medium for telephone calls by sending voice data in packets using IP rather than by traditional circuit transmissions of the PSTN. One advantage of VoIP is that the telephone calls over the Internet do not incur a surcharge beyond what the user is paying for Internet access, much in the same way that the user doesn't pay for sending individual e-mails over the Internet.

There are many Internet telephony applications available. come bundled with popular Web browsers, see Web Master Tools and Utilities. Others are stand-alone products. VoIP also is referred to as Internet telephony, IP telephony, or Voice over the Internet (VOI)

STUN: Simple Traversal of UDP (User Datagram Protocol the way VoIP is sent)  through NAT (Network Address Translation). Peer to Peer, STUN is a protocol for assisting devices behind a NAT firewall or router with their packet routing. STUN allows applications to discover the presence and types of NATs and firewalls between them and the public Internet.  It provides applications with the ability to determine the public Internet Protocol (IP) addresses allocated to them by the NAT.  STUN works with many existing NATs and allows for a wide variety of applications to work through existing NAT infrastructure.

TURN: Traversal Using Relay NAT.  NAT: Network Address Translator, an Internet standard that enables a local-area network (LAN) to use one set of IP addresses for internal traffic and a second set of addresses for external traffic. A NAT box located where the LAN meets the Internet makes all necessary IP address translations. NAT serves three main purposes: Provides a type of firewall by hiding internal IP addresses Enables a company to use more internal IP addresses. Since they're used internally only, there's no possibility of conflict with IP addresses used by other companies and organizations. Allows a company to combine multiple ISDN connections into a single Internet connection This method may cost extra in delay and Bandwidth, therefore it is usually better to use STUN where possible this may be done with ICE.

ICE:  Interactive Connectivity Establishment. methodology to carry out communications across networks. This is the standard to allow use of STUN wherever possible and use TURN when required.

SIP, P2P: Peer to Peer SIP proposes running P2P protocols over SIP messaging, this draft proposes the opposite layering. Replacing SIP with a general Peer to Peer protocol. Layering of SIP on top of Peer to Peer has many advantages. A number of DHT (Distributed Hash Table) Peer to Peer protocols that solve some similar functions are given as examples. Finally, an approach to the discovery of NAT traversal relays using a logically separate Peer to Peer network is proposed.

Since they're used internally only, there's no possibility of conflict with IP addresses used by other companies and organizations. Allows a company to combine multiple ISDN connections into a single Internet connection.

DHT: Distributed Hash Table. Decentralized, distributed systems and algorithms being developed to provide a scalable, self-configuring infrastructure with a clean programming interface. This infrastructure can then be used to support more complex services. DHTs can be used to store data, as well as route and disseminate information.

SBC: Session Border Controllers. Discussion is how these products will ultimately be integrated with other IP telephony equipment such as softswitches, and what that means for the session border controller vendors.

PSTN: Public Switched Telephone Network. Uses POTS Plain Old Telephone System, the world's collection of interconnected public telephone networks designed primarily for voice traffic.

ISDN: Integrated Services Digital Network. An international standard for end-to-end digital transmission of voice, data, and signalling. In a videoconference it is a system that provides simultaneous voice, video, and text transmission between individual desktop videoconferencing systems and group (room) videoconferencing systems.

IP: Internet Protocol Address. The numbers that are translate and into a domain name. The address is a string of, usually four numbers separated by periods, (also view IPv6 The New Internet protocol) ,  For example Google.com has and IP address of 64.233.187.99
