Developing Web Services on IIS with Windows Server AppFabri Much of the content and samples for AppFabric shows developing your web site and services in Visual Studio with the ASP.NET Development Server and then deploying the solution to IIS and AppFabric. While this works great for many solutions, there may be cases where you want to use IIS/AppFabric in your development environment. To get started you need to prepare your machine with IIS and the appropriate settings for Visual Studio 2010 development. This article on iis.net has instructions for VS2008 but they work the same for VS2010. Here are the step by step instructions to create a web service on IIS / AppFabric with Visual Studio 2010  Windows Server AppFabric is a set of integrated technologies that make it easier to build, scale and manage Web and composite applications that run on IIS.  Windows Azure AppFabric, which helps developers connect apps and services between Windows Azure and on-premises deployments, see the Windows Azure site.

Native Client SDK. For Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux computers.

You can build web apps that seamlessly use native C/C++ code to perform high-performance computation, render 2D graphics and 3D graphics, play audio, and respond to mouse and keyboard events all without requiring users to install a plugin. These web apps run in recent versions of Chromium with the --enable-nacl flag.

If you're interested in the Native Client implementation, rather than using it to build apps, see the Native Client project.

Cloud Computing is a somewhat nebulous word to describe that modern users will "rent" or borrow online software instead of actually purchasing and installing it on their home computers. It is the exact same idea as people using Gmail or Hotmail services, except that cloud computing goes much further than simple email. Cloud computing is where entire businesses and thousands of employees will run their computer tools as online rented products. All of the processing work and file saving will be done "in the cloud" of the Internet, and the users will plug into that cloud every day to do their computer work. Which School Has Better Programmers? UCLA or USC?
Fri, 03 Feb 2012 20:00:28 +0000 - UCLA is taking on USC this weekend at the University of Southern California.  No, its not football or basketball, its a hackathon.  The Trojan Hack is bringing together programmers from both schools, to build the best apps in a 24 hour competition. The Trojan Hack was created by Ju Hae Lee and Andreas Petasis, two USC students that were inspired by the PennApps contest, and wanted to create a competition so fierce that it would settle the question between USC and UCLA once and for all.

Where is the Lanyrd API?
Fri, 03 Feb 2012 16:18:41 +0000 - Somewhere in Austin, someone is likely already organizing the lanyards for the thousands of SXSW badges for the techies next month. And somewhere in Brighton, the small team behind Lanyrd is likely working hard to make sure its social conference directory is ready for SXSW and all the other conferences that overlap their way through June and beyond. And for any developers wanting to build on top of Lanyrd, you're wondering about the Lanyrd API. It's late. And coming soon. Maybe.
20 Upcoming Hackathons: USC v UCLA Rivalry, Music and Startup Weekends
Fri, 03 Feb 2012 15:26:04 +0000 - Hackathons are a fast growing phenomenom where developers come together, usually in short periods up to 72 hours to submit ideas, form teams and hack together applications, data visualizations and sometimes form business models around their ideas. ProgrammableWeb is tracking 20 hackathons coming in the next couple weeks all around the world.
Today in APIs: Google Maps is Too Free, Angelist App and 11 New APIs
Fri, 03 Feb 2012 02:11:20 +0000 - Google MapsThe most popular API in our directory, the Google Maps API, has been called anti-competitive in France because its basic version is free. A new app built on the AngelList API lets you slice and dice startups by location and market. Plus: genealogy programmers converge, Stripe adds webhooks and 11 new APIs.

Thu, 02 Feb 2012 22:38:06 +0000 - ParseForget uploading resumes or filling out forms on some job board. Backend-as-a-service company Parse is inviting potential hires to apply via its Parse API. In what initially looks like an added barrier to entry, the company is hoping its cheeky and geeky move will attract the sort of developers who think in JSON.
API Terms and Conditions Done Right
Thu, 02 Feb 2012 22:00:01 +0000 - One of the questions we are often asked at 3scale (a ProgrammableWeb sponsor) is around legal terms and conditions (T&Cs) – once we have all the technical stuff, what should we put in the API terms and conditions? Should they be different from our web site terms and conditions? What will the impact of certain clauses be? Since we’re not a law firm, we generally can’t answer this question in detail but there are a few recurring themes we often see in T&Cs that seem worth sharing.  The content of this post should not be taken as legal advice in any way, but hopefully it provides some useful things to consider.
Frequent Google App Engine Releases to Continue in 2012
Thu, 02 Feb 2012 20:02:00 +0000 - Google App Engine has had a tough year last year. It had to deal with developer revolt when it announced it’s pricing and has also seen its mindshare in the PaaS landscape reduce with the emergence of polyglot platforms like CloudFoundry and Heroku. One thing they have got consistently going for them and which is continuing this year is their razor sharp focus on releases. Google App Engine has been averaging a release every month of late and January saw them release the latest version 1.6.2.
Today in APIs: Facebook, Bloomberg, RESTful Quandaries and 28 New APIs
Wed, 01 Feb 2012 23:57:26 +0000 - FacebookSure, Facebook filed for an IPO today, but it also provided developers some great guidance on using real-time features in the Facebook API. And while Bloomberg's lead news story is the Facebook IPO, in the API world it's probably more interesting to look at Bloomberg's new open platform. Plus: why we can't agree about REST, API-related job growth and a whopping 28 new APIs.
