Widgets are very small free-standing applications that reside on your computer, most people keep them on their desktop as a quick reference.
Generally Widgets and Gadgets are able to update data via the Internet and are therefore useful where that data is likely to be changing constantly such as with current weather conditions, stocks and shares or time relative information such as calendars. They can be used to or watch the ups and downs of your sports team and keep you in touch with the latest football scores.... the uses are endless.
Currently there are two types of Widgets, ones that work on Apple's Dashboard for OSX 10.4 Tiger and those that work via Yahoo's Widget Engine which work on both Windows computers and Macintosh computers, we make both Yahoo and Dashboard widgets. For Windows you will need XP or 2000 Download the Windows engine here.. For Mac -- you will need OSX 10.3 or later Download the MAC engine here..
If you're using Safari, in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, click the download link. When the widget download is complete, show Dashboard, click the Plus sign to display the Widget Bar and click the widget's icon in the Widget Bar to open it. If you're using a browser other than Safari, click the download link. When the widget download is complete, unarchive it and place it in /Library/Widgets/ in your home folder. show Dashboard, click the Plus sign to display the Widget Bar and click the widget's icon in the Widget Bar to open it.
It appears that Microsoft® have come up with their own name for Widgets of Gadgets.
